However, there are many important things to keep in mind when planning a vacation with your dog. Which hotels allow dogs? Are there dog friendly restaurants and bars in the area? Are there activities nearby that you and your dog can enjoy together?

After years of exploring New England with my dog, I’ve compiled my favorite dog-friendly vacation spots. With tons of options for dog-friendly hotels, restaurants, and activities, these ideas for dog trips are sure to get your pup excited. So grab your favorite travel paws and get ready to plan the ultimate New England dog vacation!
Jackson, Nh Pet Friendly Lodging
Burlington, Vermont is one of the most dog-friendly places in New England. With incredible outdoor adventures and a beautiful, laid-back city, Burlington is a dog playground like no other. You will find lots of fun things to do with your dog. Bike the Burlington Greenway along Lake Champlain before stopping to sample a local brew at one of the city’s dog-friendly breweries. Burlington breweries that allow kids on the patio include Foam Brewers and Zero Gravity Craft Brewery, while places like Switchback Brewing Co also allow dogs indoors. Church Street Marketplace, one of New England’s largest pedestrian (and dog-friendly) malls, has a variety of dog-friendly restaurants and shops. A bed and breakfast within walking distance of downtown, Made Inn Vermont offers pet-friendly accommodations and a comfortable home away from home for you and your dog.
When the dog days of summer arrive, there’s no better place to hang out with your pooch than Cape Cod! With miles of pristine coastline, irresistible charm and plenty of outdoor activities, Cape Cod is the perfect summer destination for people and dogs alike. You will have a lot of fun visiting Cape Cod National Seashore. This section of beaches and sunny sandy paths allows dogs to be led even during the season. Then quench your thirst at Provincetown Brewing Company. They’re so dog-loving (and socially conscious) that there’s a doghouse in the beer garden that says “I Bite Racists.” There are also several places on the cape where you can stay with pets. Treat your dog to the luxurious Chatham Bars Inn or try “digging” with your pooch at the Nickerson State Park Campground.

If you want to relax by the ocean with your dog, check out Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Just five miles south of Portland, it’s a great getaway without going too far. At the south end of Fort Williams State Park, where the Portland Lighthouse is located, there is a large grassy area where dogs can run and play. Of course, you can’t visit Maine without trying the local lobster, and Bite in Maine has an outdoor food truck located in the park with pet-friendly picnic tables. Higgins Beach is a popular place for pups to run wild on the sand and splash in the water. After a long day enjoying the sun, relax at Inn by the Sea, a luxury beachfront hotel that provides the best care for pets and their owners.
Pet Friendly Spots In Boston Perfect For Dogs
You and your dog will love exploring Nantucket together. This small island off the coast of Cape Cod has no traffic lights and plenty of New England charm. Right after the ferry ride, where you’ll see many other pet owners, it’s clear that Nantucket is a welcoming place for canine visitors. Choose from a variety of dog-friendly activities, from the Sconset Bluff Walk to exploring historic towers. There are plenty of dog-friendly patios in town, including breakfast spot Black-Eyed Susan and American bistro Queekueg’s. Sit back and stay a while at the peaceful Brass Lantern Inn, which welcomes four-legged friends in select rooms for a modest fee.
This dog-friendly town in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom is a must-see. Known as the Ski Capital of the East, Stowe attracts visitors from near and far to its world-class resort every winter. But with plenty of outdoor activities in every season, Stove is a great place to relax with your dog.
For serious hikers, Smuggler’s Notch State Park offers miles of trails through the spectacular Green Mountains. For something more modest (but just as fun), you and your dog will love walking the Stowe Recreational Trail. This 11 km long paved road is lined with restaurants and establishments for dogs. There are also plenty of dog-friendly places in the area for every budget. Luxury resorts like the Trapp Family Lodge, Topnotch Resort, and the Lodge at Spruce Peak provide creature comforts. However, if you’re looking for something more affordable, consider staying with your dog at the Field Guide Lodge or The Stovehof.

Our son Lincoln has been traveling with us since 2019 and is a big part of why we love to travel. Simply put, flying in the car is the cheapest way to travel with him (and we take Lincoln almost everywhere we go).

Lincoln takes you to New England on this trip because the summer and fall temperatures are great, outdoor activities abound, and you’ll find one of the most dog-friendly national parks in the United States.
This itinerary is similar to our Wicked Goodness: 10 Days of NO itinerary, but only with major stops and suggestions to bring your child!
During the summer, take advantage of longer daylight hours and cooler temperatures than you’ll find in many other states this time of year. Or travel in the fall and take advantage of the beautiful fall foliage at one of the world’s best leaf viewing spots.
Favorite Dog Friendly Hotels In New England
We spent 5 months in Ontario and New England during our 2022 travel season. We spent two weeks in VT in July, a long weekend camping on the Shodick Peninsula in Acadia National Park in early August, three weeks near Lake Placid, NY mid to late. August, a month in Campton, NH in September, three weeks there. Ellsworth, ME in early October and three weeks in Attleboro, MA in late October. (We also spent three weeks in Ontario at the beginning of our trip.)
It really wasn’t a bad time to be in New England during those months. Sure, the summer months can be hot at night, but make sure your apartment has air conditioning and you’ll be fine. (To be fair, we’re saying this as people who live in Texas anyway, so our heat tolerance is probably higher than those who live up north year-round. However, we don’t do anything without air conditioning, so In that sense, our tolerance is you’re probably down, ha!)
However, we will say that if you want to plan a trip to see the beautiful fall foliage, aim for the second week of October. Although the areas known for foliage will be busy (ie Kancamagus Highway and Stow, VT), the views will be worth it!
